Unhealthy Relationship Patterns

If you’re here, you might already have a sense that something in your relationships doesn’t feel quite right.

Unhealthy relationships often involve patterns of disconnection, tension, or imbalance—where you’re left feeling anxious, diminished, or unsure of yourself. This can look like a lack of respect, honesty, or emotional safety, but it’s not always obvious.

Sometimes it’s a quieter, ongoing feeling that you’re not being fully seen, heard, or valued.  You might notice certain patterns repeating, even if the relationship itself looks “fine” from the outside.

These patterns can show up as:

  • Shutting down during conflict or avoiding hard conversations

  • Falling into cycles of criticism, defensiveness, or blame

  • Passive-aggressive communication or unspoken resentment

  • Pulling away from emotional or physical closeness

  • Bringing up the past or feeling like you have to keep score

Over time, this can leave you feeling disconnected not just from the other person, but from yourself. Many of the people I work with describe feeling confused, overwhelmed, or questioning their own needs and worth in relationships.

It’s important to say that these patterns are not about one person being “the problem.” More often, they’re shaped by earlier experiences—how we learned to relate, to protect ourselves, and to cope when our emotional needs weren’t fully met.  Without realising it, we can find ourselves repeating what feels familiar, even when it’s no longer serving us.

How counselling can help:

In our work together, we gently explore these patterns at your pace.
I offer a calm, supportive space where you can begin to make sense of your relationship experiences without judgment or pressure to have it all figured out.

This isn’t about blaming yourself or anyone else. It’s about understanding what’s underneath your patterns, reconnecting with your emotions and needs, and learning how to respond in ways that feel more grounded and aligned with who you are.

Over time, many clients find they’re able to:

  • Feel more confident expressing their needs

  • Set clear, healthy boundaries without guilt

  • Understand their emotional responses rather than feeling overwhelmed by them

  • Create relationships that feel more secure, respectful, and connected

You don’t have to keep repeating the same patterns to feel safe or loved.

Therapy with me is a space where you can slow things down, feel genuinely heard, and begin to move towards relationships and a way of being that feel calmer, more connected, and more like you.
